"Ask me anytime if my ass is sweating and I will answer yes!" -Shannon O'Neil

Day 2 - Rio De Janeiro

As the title suggests it is a little hot here, but no one is complaining, it is amazing. After many hours in airports and on airplanes we finally arrived in Rio yesterday, and survived a rather frightening taxi ride into the busy, yet quaint, tree lined streets of Copacabana. The neighborhood seems to be a mix of travelers, upper-middle class citizens and favela dwellers. The theme of our hostel is a laid back retreat, where guests and staff mingle, and gather with travelers from other hostels in the evening to drink caiprinihas and have a good time.
We spent today on the beautiful Copacabana beach, which despite its bad rap, was relaxing and entertaining. Vendors walking along the white sand beach selling everything from fake tattos to whole cooked shrimp on a stick. Our favorites: huge slices of watermelon for about $1.50, and 5 scoops of ice cream for $0.50! It was really fascinating to see how many people were out selling various different items, what a crazy way to make a living.
When people talk about the teensy weensy bikinis in Rio, they aren´t kidding, and it is not just the teensy weensy who wear them, but hey, kudos to them for not giving a damn!
We got some great pics and will post them on our next entry, highlights to look forward to: the urban mullet, and man with no pants.
We are headed out now to go see some live samba music! Hope everyone is having a great day back home!

Annie, Leanne & Shannon

  4. To beat the heat get up at sunrise and take a long walk, or run, along the beautiful mosaic walkway along Copacabana Beach. Catch a cup of STRONG Brazilian coffee and some of their great pastries. While on the beach try some of the ice cold lemonade the hawkers sell poured from drums they carry. Then, after a hard day at the beach playing volleyball,go to a beach bar for some great Brazilian beer and their scrumcious bar food. Sugarloaf is worth the trip. Have great fun and adventure.
